The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to measure the planar flow field inside an enclosed cylindrical chamber containing a smooth rotating disc. Details of the experimental procedures used are reported. Two laminar cases near the transitional flow regime were measured and compared directly with the results obtained from a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. Direct comparisons of the present PIV and CFD data with both experimental and numerical results reported by other investigators was also made and close agreement was found. Finally, an assessment of the overall accuracy of the measurements is made.
