Abstract of
VISUALISATION OF THE DISINTEGRATION OF AN ANNULAR LIQUID
SHEET IN A COAXIAL AIRBLAST INJECTOR AT LOW ATOMISING AIR VELOCITIES

Visualisation and analysis of instabilities and disintegration
of an annular liquid sheet in a coaxial airblast injector at low atomising air
velocities was conducted. The near exit injector dense spray region was investigated.
Images were acquired and processed by using a spot light backlighting method,
a high gating speed intensified CCD camera and an image acquisition system. The
analysis of the characteristic overall appearance and the topographic details
of the issuing liquid was performed. Prior to the study of the liquid sheet disintegration
process, a detailed characterisation of the air flow downstream of the atomiser
was performed, using a LDV system. The main liquid disintegration regimes are
identified and explained. It is also demonstrated that the break-up length of
the liquid is a function of the momentum of the coaxial air flows.
